The Genesis of our "Wondrous Band"

From 1914 to Infinity
The Genesis of our Wondrous Band began with the vision, valor, and inspiration of our Noble Founders, Most Honorable Bro. A. Langston Taylor, Bro. Leonard F. Morse and Bro. Charles I. Brown. On the glorious day of January 9th, 1914 at Howard University, Washington D.C, the Greatest Fraternity to grace God's green Earth was manifested.
These brothers wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service.
The founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself as "a part of" the general community rather than "apart from" the general community. They believed that each potential member should be judged on his own merits rather than his family background or affluence without regard to race, nationality, color, skin tone or texture of hair. They wished and wanted their fraternity to exist as a part of the even greater brotherhood-sisterhood which would be devoted to the "inclusive we" rather than the "exclusive we".
Armed with the principles governing our motto, "Culture for Service and Service for Humanity...” these great men created an organization that would soon inspire men to go out into the world and serve mankind.”...In numbers though were three", these founders united an ensemble of African-American men heralding the world with the coming of Sigma, and bonded by fraternal brotherhood of the highest order. |

SigmaBahamas History
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Delta Epsilon Sigma Chapter was founded in Nassau, Bahamas on May 19, 1978. This chapter was chartered because Bahamian brothers felt that they needed a local outlet (Alumni Chapter) for brothers who had just graduated from college in the U.S.A. |
The Five charter members were: Rev. Enoch Backford, now a renowned Baptist Minister in The Bahamas; Kevin Hanna, now a bank executive at The Bank of The Bahamas; William Dean, now a tourism official in The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism; Danny Strachan & Freddie Munnings Jr.
The Beta Beta Lambda was chartered as a result of the men of Delta Epsilon Sigma's vision to bring Sigma to the College of The Bahamas, where no Greek letter organization had gone before. Beta Beta Lambda was chartered in November of 2004. The first officers were: Derek Smith Jr. - President, Emille Hunt - Vice-President, D'Angelo Reid - Treasurer, Gerardo Williams - Secretary and Robert M. Bailey III - Chairman of Education.
The ongoing quest of SigmaBahamas is to serve The Bahamas as a leader in the local Greek world. This is being accomplished by providing and endorsing meaningful social activities, making available opportunities for scholarly endeavors, and most importantly, attracting and maintaining a collection of young business-minded men who possess high morals and socioeconomic standards. However, without them the organization would cease to exist and its ideals would perish. |
